Raine Miller Romance

Where history comes unlaced..

Libertine Lover…sold!

28 Oct 2011

Got the call yesterday that my second novel will be published by Siren Bookstrand in 2012.  Digital in February and yes…wait for it…in print by June!  I am so happy about that.  To actually hold the printed book will be something.  At least for me it is.   Libertine is a Victorian-Noir romance with an unlikely hero who falls for a girl that may be too damaged for his wicked ways.  His transformation was fun to write.

Here is an excerpt from Libertine Lover~

Lamia on Her Knees... John William Waterhouse

The squall which had sprung up escalated as the minutes ticked by.  Jeremy could tell the moment she spotted him though.  She slowed noticeably as if unsure whether to continue in his direction.

Pulling his horse to a stop, he dismounted.  “Miss Georgina Russell, I believe.”  He inclined his head in greeting.  “Do you remember me?  I am—”

“I remember you, sir,” she cut him off, eying him stonily.

An attempt at lightheartedness compelled him to ask, “What’s my name then?”

“You are Mr. Greymont, my brother’s friend.”  Her eyes fluttered down and away from him.  They were golden eyes, glowing amber and liquid, like the smooth scotch whiskey he favored, swirling in a cut glass.

“Well done, Miss Georgina.  I am just on my way to your house now.  I’ve been invited for the—”

“Shooting party,” she interrupted, her eyes returning back to him, but still so very solemn.  That was twice now she had stopped him mid-speech.  This girl before him was wary, on edge.  If he didn’t know better he’d say she seemed almost afraid of him.  She was a wholly different person than he recalled, greatly changed.  Georgina had grown up most fair for truth, but in her manner she had definitely altered.

“Please allow me to take you home on my horse.  Samson here is so strong he won’t even notice he’s carrying the both of us.”  Jeremy reached up a hand to give the great horse an affectionate pat on the neck.  “He’s gentle as a lamb around ladies.”

“No, sir.”  She shook her head gently, making the cool rain dripping off her nose look absurd.

“I must insist.  This rain is piss—”  He cleared his throat and tried again, cursing himself for speaking so coarsely.  “Um, the rain shower, it’s quite fierce at the moment.  You realize you shouldn’t subject yourself to the wet chill longer than need be.  Think of your health.”

She looked hesitant, unsure, shifting her weight as she stood there sizing his offer.  Sizing him up.

He knew the uncontrollable urge to convince her.  “I intend to get out of this rain myself, Miss Georgina, and I cannot do that if you won’t come with me.  I’ll not leave you here alone on the road in a downpour,” he told her determinedly.  “Come with me.”  Jeremy reached out his hand to her.  “You know who I am.  It’s all right.”

She stared at him, her eyes darting, as if making a decision to trust him or bolt back into the woods.  Just like a nervous filly.  She bit the corner of her bottom lip, probably having no idea how charming she looked in her indecision.  Her lips were dark pink and full, puckered at the corner of her mouth where her teeth came together with flesh in between.  How do those lips taste, I wonder?  Will I ever know?  I want to know.

Jeremy smiled gently, bobbing his arm that extended the hand.  “You are safe with me.”

Those were the magic words apparently.

She stepped forward.

Interview at The Steam Room~

1 Oct 2011

Michelle Zurlow had me at The Steam Room for my first interview.  It was fun and kind of strange at the same time.  Here’s the link and you can read for yourself:   http://www.michelezurlo.com/apps/blog/show/7446517-raine-miller-visits-the-steam-room-%20

Another review~

21 Sep 2011

My second review, courtesy of Brenda Talley at  The Romance Studio gave His Perfect Passion 4 1/2 hearts out of 5.  Here is part of her review:

Ms. Raine Miller has presented us with a unique tale of long-lasting love and the feelings of inadequacy felt by the insecure Marianne. Her characters are well written and interesting. Her supporting cast was also likeable and helped to get the story across to readers. The majority of the book was the interactions between the main couple.

This book was graphic. The sexual encounters were scorching. I don’t believe this would be a good read for the faint hearted. The wording was quite visual and sexual scenes were frequent. This quick-read was a page turner. The ending was surprising. Miller has, once again, written a big hit. Congratulations, Ms. Miller!

My first review~

19 Jul 2011

Stephanie Rollins over at Book Review R Us.com gave me my first one.  This is what she had to say…

Darius wants Marianne.  He always has.  Now, she is of marrying age.  Her father is facing debtor’s prison.  If Marianne refuses him, he will bribe her with her father’s freedom.  Will it come down to that?

Marianne does not feel worthy to marry Darius, who happens to be rich.  She has a deep, dark secret that haunts her.

Darius likes to dominate.  Marianne is a virgin, but she has fantasies of being submissive.  It seems like a perfect match.

This is a great erotic book.  The innocence ready to be lost, the submissive nature ready to give in, and the longing create for such a tantalizing read.  The characters are perfectly developed, and the plot is well-defined.  This is a book to read and recommend to friends.

I am thrilled to get 5 stars for my first.  It really made my day and pulled a smile out of me.  Raine~

They made me a banner~

20 May 2011

Now, isn’t that pretty?  My book released yesterday and I must say the excitement of first sales is pretty heady.  The nice folks at Bookstrand give you a sales tracker that lets you know how many books you sell every hour.  For new authors here is a tip… “you check it a lot.”   *smiling wink*

Upon opening my email this morning I was thrilled to see the banner that was created for my first book.  I love that the blue shawl got added to this one.  It’s definitely part of the story and it pleases me to know that whoever made the banner actually read the cover questionnaire I filled out way back in February.  I’m telling you, Siren-Bookstrand has done me good and I couldn’t be happier with my first publishing experience.

Excitement is good and motivating to most people, BUT like most things, needs tempering.  You’ve all heard the saying~ Too much of good thing…

So, it’s pretty simple really…if I can just restrain myself from returning to my Sales Report, oh, every 10 minutes or so, I might actually get my word count in for the book I’m writing now.

My cover! Come to Momma~

5 May 2011

The long awaited cover has finally arrived. And I feel like a new mommy recovering from the birth. Kind of appropriate with Mother’s Day just around the corner. *wink*

Not to take anything away from mothers and the life-altering experience of actually giving birth, I can now say I have endured both, and while difficult and emotional at times, the rewards of holding the prize in your arms is incomparable.

Let me just say that I love my cover. *I love my babies too*

The final product incorporates my vision for His Perfect Passion, well…perfectly. I love the way Darius is holding Marianne and the expression on his face. There is no doubt about what he feels for her. Marianne’s face is hidden, and that fits too because she is hiding a secret which compels her actions throughout their story. I’m glad the mansion along the coast is in there because the sea is critical to the plot of His Perfect Passion.

Now, the journey to getting to this point was not without its bumps, but I’ll share that story another time.  Let’s just say that the first version didn’t quite mesh with my vision.  *takes a deep breath*

I hope you enjoy my very first romance cover as much as I am.  And if you’re wondering and don’t already know, yes, that’s Jimmy Thomas.  *blows kiss to Jimmy*

Please help me! Facebook’s taking over my life!

26 Apr 2011

The first thing a new author learns is that “self- promotion” should become your new best friend.

“Okay.  So what’s an easy thing to do to promote my work?” I asked innocently.

“You set up a Facebook account and interact with people.  Social media is how you build a readership.  All authors have them, Raine!”  *feels like an idiot for asking and gets <where have you been living, under a rock?> kinds of looks*

Now, that’s all well and good, but gosh darn, there are only so many hours in the day!  As soon as you set up your account, Facebook sucks you in.  I mean literally within minutes!  There’s a news feed that tells you what your friends are doing.  There are new friend requests, people you want to be friends with, and old friends from high school to reconnect with.   And all of it drags you back to your computer repeatedly to check for updates.  I’ve heard this is not unusual.  In fact it’s the typical response for most new Facebookers.

All of this interacting takes time though.  You have to be friendly and social by posting on your wall and thanking others for “friending” you.  You must be funny and share witty prose and cool pictures for your friends to comment on.  And don’t forget that you have to go around clicking the “Like” button on your friends stuff.  There is a protocol and it must be followed.  Duh!  You don’t want people to think you’re a jerk do you?

What is the point of your rant, Raine?  Why are you telling us what we already know?

*looks sheepish*  Sorry, I just needed to get that out, I guess.  You see, I’m finding it very hard to write when it’s so much more fun to play on Facebook.  Or when I should be plotting out a new story or editing one I’ve already written.  So I’m learning that finding a balance between the crafting and the socializing is harder than I ever thought it would be.  As my Facebook friends have grown in number, my daily word counts have shrunk.  And that is not a good thing if you are trying to build a successful writing career.

I like this quote by Paul Boese:   “We come into this world head first and go out feet first; in between, it is all a matter of balance.”

Yeah, thanks for that, Paul.  That’s really great  advice you’ve–  *beep sounds*  Oh, sorry–  I gotta go.  Just got a txt message… 5 new friend requests waiting for me on FB…

“The new phonebook’s here!”

16 Apr 2011

Remember that line from the movie, The Jerk with Steve Martin?  He runs around doing the happy dance when the new phonebook is delivered.  That was me when my long-awaited first edits arrived yesterday for His Perfect Passion.  Except nowadays documents are delivered in an email and I don’t think I’m quite as ignorant as poor Navin Johnson was in that movie.  Well, I hope not anyway.

It was an exciting moment because it validated once again that my book really is being published.  I’ve learned there’s a lot of waiting around in the publishing business.  You have to use that waiting time to write your next book because you’ll have to wait some more for it too.

And the result wasn’t nearly as bad as I’d worried it might be.   The editor sent two documents.  One was a checklist with notations, suggestions and compliments, and the other was a word doc. of my whole book with all the corrections highlighted in different colors and balloon comments telling you what they want you to look at over on the right.  I like how my editor said, “please consider changing this to…for better clarity,” rather than saying, “that’s just stupid the way you wrote this, Raine!”  (Thanks, Caroline, for being so nice to me.)

That kind of niceness is another thing I’ve experienced over and over since I’ve started down this writerly path.  The people in this business are just downright wonderful.  Whether they’re writers or publishers or bloggers or readers or Facebookers or whatever, they are kind and helpful, funny and interesting.  I’ve met so many lovely people and am having such a good time doing this, I wish I’d started writing years ago.

The Word Around RT…x3

8 Apr 2011

My first convention.  My grade report?  I’d give it an A-.  The venue is nice, the people are friendly, and the swag is plentiful.  I’ve been here 12 hours and have received 12 free books so far, numerous reading ephemera and made some writer friends who may just be the coup of this whole thing.  You see, they know what they’re talking about.

I sat in several workshops today and one theme was repeated, and repeated, and repeated.

…Digital romance publishing is growing so big, sooooooo fast that people are afraid to predict just how big it’s going to get.

I listened to author after author after author tell me how they make more money on their e-pubs than on their mass-market publications.  Another very nice, multi-pub’d author (someone I had heard of before I came here) told me about how she’s recently made the foray into self-publishing with two novellas that have done nothing but sell, sell, sell.  (Are you feeling the triplicate theme here?)  The bottom line on your self-published books:  You get to keep all of the $ on those.

So what’s a newbie authoress to do?  Nothing rash, that”s for sure.  I’ll keep my options open and keep writing books.  That was the second most oft heard nugget of wisdom:

“The best thing you can do to publicize your writing career is to write another book.”  And another, and another, and another…

Hugs,

Raine

The Stolen Kiss

25 Mar 2011

The Stolen Kiss, late 1780's

I’ve had people asking me about some of the paintings featured in my posts and thought I’d share the one in my header image.  I actually have this print on a canvas on the wall above my laptop.  I used it for inspiration for a scene in a WIP (work in progress).  The hero, Colin, goes after Elle and gets what he was after, thank you very much!

The artist, Jean-Honoré Fragonard (pronounced without the /d/ at the end) was a French painter whose work became all the rage for the wealthy art patrons of Louis XV’s pleasure-loving, licentious court and influenced what he painted: mostly scenes of love and voluptuousness, considered scandalous, but hugely popular with the hedonists of the day.  History lesson:  Louis the 15th was the French king just before the one who lost his head in the French Revolution.  So, the wild revelry was great while it lasted.

A Young Girl Reading, c. 1776

The reading girl in the yellow dress is an image much copied and reprinted, so you may have seen it before.  Another vastly popular painting is the one of the girl swinging while her lover checks under her skirts.  Ahem, yes, those French boys were naughty that way.

The Swing, 1767

So what happened to Fragonard, you ask?  Well, the French Revolution happened, that’s what.  And it cost him his private patrons (they got the axe, or guillotine as it were) and he decided it would be a good time to get the hell out of France himself.  Fragonard didn’t return to Paris until early in the 19th c. where he died in 1806, almost completely forgotten.

For a half century after that he was ignored, not even mentioned in the 1873 edition of  History of Art.  Reevaluation by later scholars have changed that though, confirming his position among the all-time masters of French painting.

Okay boys and girls, that concludes our lesson for today.  You may get out your snacks and line up for recess.
